Thiruvananthapuram: On Monday, Union Minister Smriti Irani poked fun at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, claiming that Wayanad, where Gandhi once served as an MP, would "suffer the same fate" as Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, if Gandhi "remains" there.
Gandhi was the member of parliament for the Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency until he was found guilty of criminal defamation and given a two-year sentence by a court in Gujarat. The Gujarat High Court is currently deliberating the Congress leader's request to temporarily halt the execution of his sentence.
Irani boasted that she had the "good fortune" of being the person who "sent away" Gandhi from Amethi when she opened the state-level Women Labour Convention sponsored by the Kerala unit of Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) here.—Inputs from Agencies
